Summary:

Latrobe Little League and Williamsport's Brandon Little League combined for eleven home runs in their three state tournament meetings, but it was a miscue on a routine grounder that helped propel Latrobe to a 6-5 title game win. It was Latrobe's first state title in six state tournament appearances over four decades.

Latrobe was down to its last strike in the 'if' game of the Pennsylvania state tournament before rallying to force extra innings. Zach Little's three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning had given Brandon a 5-3 lead, and though Latrobe had rallied to trim the deficit to 5-4, Eric Christianson faced a 2-2 count with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Christianson barely tipped a pitch to keep the count alive, then hit a grounder to second that was misplayed by the Brandon fielder and allowed the tying run to score. In the seventh, Nathan Braden singled and eventually scored on Tommy Schultz's two-out single to propel Latrobe to the title.

The lead changed three times in the 'if' game. Brandon took an early 1-0 lead when Kory Datres singled and eventually scored on a three-base error, and Jason Edkins homered to give the Williamsport squad a 2-0 lead. Latrobe rallied to take the lead with a three-run fifth inning rally. A passed ball allowed one run to score, and Braden slammed a two-run homer to give Latrobe its first lead of the game before Little's homer regained the lead for Brandon.

Latrobe and Brandon met three times in the state tournament. In the first meeting, Latrobe managed only four hits off of Little, but made them all count in a 3-1 victory. Latrobe took an early lead when Braden singled and eventually scored on Chris Sarnese's single, and later extended the lead to 3-1 when Brian Boltich followed Braden's second hit of the game with a two-run homer.

Winning pitcher Tim Schultz, who cruised through five innings with a one-hitter, staved off a last-ditch Brandon rally. Brian Reeder crushed a solo home run to open the inning, then a Matt Flook base hit and a Jeff Hughes ground-rule double put the tying run in scoring position with nobody out. Schultz calmly recorded a strikeout, was aided by a diving catch on the foul line by his right fielder, and ended the game with a strikeout to send Latrobe to the championship game. Schultz struck out 10 and Little struck out 11 in the pitchers' duel.

Brandon eliminated Morrisville Little League (a three-run homer by ninth place hitter Noah Nelms and a solo shot by Little propelled Brandon to the 5-4 win) to set up another meeting with Latrobe. Brandon -- which would hit 13 home runs in their six state tournament games -- slammed four homers to outslug Latrobe 11-8 and force the 'if' game. Latrobe took an early 2-0 lead, but Reeder's two-run homer and a solo blast by Edkin staked Brandon to a 4-2 lead. After Latrobe rallied to take a 5-4 lead, Edkins connected on his second homer of the day. The three-run blow fueled a five run rally and gave Brandon a 9-5 lead that it never relinquished. Braden and Sarnese later homered for Latrobe, and Flook added another round-tripper for Brandon.
