Summary:
Pottsville Railway Park Little League rode a deep pitching staff and a rediscovered offensive attack to its first ever state title.
Railway Park did not score an earned run in either of its two early-round victories, while pitchers Dave DeStefano (three-hitter) and Alex Miranda (one-hitter) registered consecutive shutouts. After Berwyn-Paoli Little League posted a come-from-behind win to force a third meeting with Railway Park, Pottsville manager Irv Schappell shook up his batting order, and his team responded by pounding out 12 hits in a 9-1 title game victory. DeStefano (double, home run) and third baseman Jeff Ridge each went 3-for-4, while Miranda added a two-run homer. DeStefano scattered four hits and allowed only one ball to leave the infield in picking up his second state tournament victory. DeStefano, Miranda, Ridge, and Anthony Mehling all had started on Railway Park's 1996 state tournament qualifying team.
Railway Park continued to showcase its pitching at the Eastern Region Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. Miranda's tourney-opening no-hitter against Ed Walsh Little League (Meriden, Connecticut) set the tone: Railway Park did not allow a run in pool competition. After Miranda again beat Ed Walsh in the semifinals, DeStefano withstood a last-gasp rally by a never-say-die team from St. Mary's American Little League (California/Hollywood, Maryland) in a 2-1 title game victory that earned Railway Park a berth in the Little League World Series. After an opening round win over Central Region champion Dyer Little League (Indiana), Railway Park dropped two tight games to finish third in the U.S. pool with a 1-2 record.
