Summary:

Montoursville Little League pitcher Andy Shimp struck out Milton's cleanup hitter with the bases loaded and two outs to preserve his team's 7-6 title game win over defending state champion Milton Little League. Montoursville had overcome 2-0 and 5-3 deficits before snapping a 5-5 tie with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

For the second consecutive game, Montoursville's offense was aided by Milton's pitchers: Montoursville rallied from the initial 2-0 defecit to score three runs in the second inning on a hit, four walks, and a hit batter. In their earlier 7-2 win over Milton, Montoursville plated six runs in the fourth inning on four walks, an error, a hit batter, and two singles. Milton's roster included seven players from the 1984 state championship team.

The state title game marked the close of the remarkable Little League career of Milton's Greg Stover. Stover led his team to the state title as an eleven-year-old in 1984, then was 7-0 with three consecutive no-hitters in tournament play in 1985. His no-hitter string began in a Section 3 quarterfinal victory over Red Land Little League, reached new heights in an 18-strikeout perfect game performance against Plains Little League in the Section 3 title game (he also hit three home runs and drove in eight runs in the 11-0 victory), and continued in the state tournament when he no-hit Franklin Little League. The Lower Perkiomen Indians Little League ended the string by managing two hits in his next outing.

In the state championship game, Stover -- who hit over .700 in tournament play -- led off the first inning with a home run, then was intentionally walked by Shimp three times. The final intentional walk demonstrated just how much respect the Montoursville coaching staff had for Stover. With Montoursville leading 7-5, Stover represented the winning run as he came to the plate with two runners on base and one out. Faced with the prospect of Stover pitching if the tournament came down to a winner-take-all game, Montoursville elected to walk Stover to load the bases and take their chances with Milton's second, third, and fourth place hitters. The strategy paid off, and Montoursville captured its first state title.
