Summary:
After being held hitless for three innings, Pittsburgh's Uptown Little League bunched all five of its hits into a three run fourth inning as it defeated the Middletown Athletic Association Little League, 3-1, for the state title. Middletown scored in the first inning when Bill Vergan led off the game with a single and came around to score on three wild pitches. Uptown hurler Warnie Goodwin (10 strikeouts) settled down, allowing only one hit the rest of the way, and his teammates rallied in the fourth. Jim Thomas and Brian Dixon roped doubles to tie the game, and Mark Kerr then lined a two-run homer over the left field fence. Middletown pitcher Dan McLaren allowed two more singles, but escaped further damage.
Uptown advanced to the championship game by coming from behind to defeat Somerset Area Little League in the semifinal round. Willie Clay's two-run homer in the third put Uptown ahead, while Dixon slammed an insurance home run in the sixth. Winning pitcher Joe Thomas struck out seven and worked out of several jams. Somerset pitcher Andy Rush started strong (10 strikeouts in the first four innings) but eventually tired, as eight of the last nine Uptown batters put the ball in play.
In the other semifinal, Middletown scored all four of its runs in the third inning (Tom Riley's foul line-hugging home run opened the scoring), and then held off a late charge. Berwick Area Little League scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but stranded the potential game-tying run at third base as Middletown held on for a 4-3 victory.
