Essex Junction Little League scored multiple runs in each of the game's first three innings to defeat Shelburne Little League, 9-4, in the Vermont state championship game at Spaulding High School in Barre.

The win, Essex Junction's second over Shelburne in the tournament, gave the District 3 champions their first state championship in three years, and their fifth overall. Essex Junction had finished as the runner-up in the 2005 and 2006 Vermont state tournaments.

Essex Junction struck for three runs in the top of the first inning and added two more in the second, but Shelburne stayed close by also scoring in its first two at-bats. Essex Junction then capitalized on untimely walks to add three runs in the third inning.

Mike Lynch walked three times in the game for Essex Junction, and scored three runs. Buddy Gammel added a pair of singles, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Zach Higgins also contributed to his team's eight hit attack with a double. Tim Jones paced Shelburne with a pair of singles, and Drew Nick hit a two-run homer in the first inning.

Essex Junction pitcher Steve Jurkiewicz struck out nine and allowed five hits before switching positions late in the game.

Essex Junction opened the tournament with a 7-4 victory over Shelburne. Jurkiewicz struck out eight in five innings of work, and sparked Essex Junction offense with a second inning grand slam. The victory avenged Essex Junction's 6-5 loss to the same league in the 2005 state championship game.

Essex Junction then moved into the championship game by rallying late to top Connecticut Valley South Little League, 7-6. Connecticut Valley South carried a 5-3 lead in the third inning when Gammel delivered a three-run homer that put Essex Junction in front for good. Jurkiewicz had earlier homered, and Lynch later added a run-scoring double to round out his team's scoring.

Aaron Gryzch pitched the final four innings for Essex Junction to earn the victory.

Shelburne rebounded from its opening round loss with a pair of victories, defeating Barre 12-1 in four innings, and then using four home runs to outslug Connecticut Valley South, 9-4. Brendan Davitt and Drew Nick both homered as Shelburne put the game away early with three first inning runs that were followed by a seven run burst in the second. Alexander Bulla added a two-run triple and drove in four runs for the winners.

The next day, Will Conroy and Dylan Ireland homered in the second inning, then Nick and Quinn Kropf connected on back-to-back blasts in the fifth to lead Shelburne past Connecticut Valley South. Conroy also contributed an RBI double, while Kidder Spillane added a two-run single. Joe Cravero homered for Connecticut Valley South.

Essex Junction also captured the Vermont state championship in the major baseball division in 1974, 1987, 2002, and 2004.
