Summary:
San Antonio's McAllister Park National Little League edged Lubbock Southwest Little League, 6-5, in the championship game of the Texas West state tournament at Kelly Field in Fort Worth.
The victory -- McAllister Park's second victory in the three one-run games that the two teams played in the state tournament -- gave the San Antonio league its first-ever Texas West championship in the major baseball division. McAllister Park National advanced to the Southwestern Region tournament in Waco, and ultimately finished as the third place United States team at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
McAllister Park's other charter, the McAllister Park American Little League, had reached the Little League World Series in 2009, and also won the state title in 2004. Prior to the league's split into two charters, McAllister Park Little League had won a Texas-wide state championship in 1987.
But McAllister Park National had finished as the Texas West runner-up in its three trips to the state tournament since 2003. Between the two charters, six McAllister Park teams had reached the Texas West championship game in a ten-year span.
McAllister Park came into the state tournament having outscored seven opponents in district and sectional tournament competition by an 81-2 margin, and the District 19 kingpins opened play in Waco with an 11-5 victory over Section 4 winner North Brownsville Little League. But McAllister Park then played three consecutive one-run games against the Lubbock team. The Nationals edged Lubbock, 6-5, in the winner's bracket final, then suffered their first defeat of the international tournament in a 4-3 loss in the first championship series meeting. But McAllister Park claimed the title by winning in the tournament's 'if' game the following morning.
Lubbock Southwest had opened the tournament with a 6-2 victory over Fort Worth's University Little League before falling in the first meeting with McAllister Park, and then eliminated North Brownsville, 13-10, in the elimination bracket final.
Lubbock Southwest reached the state championship game for the second time in five years. The District 2 champions had defeated McAllister Park National, 6-5, in the championship game of the 2009 Texas West championship tournament.
