Summary:

Laredo's Del Mar Little League avenged an earlier defeat with a doubleheader sweep of Lubbock Midwest Little League to win the Texas West championship tournament at Marvin Norcross Stadium in Waco.

Del Mar pounded Lubbock 19-7 in the first championship series game, then returned two hours later to claim the title with a 5-3 win over the same team.

With the wins, Del Mar became the first Laredo league ever to reach region tournament competition in the major baseball division, and advanced to the Southwestern Region tournament in Waco.

"We hit the ball extremely well," said Del Mar manager Dr. Rene Compean, whose team had 25 hits in the two wins. Six different Del Mar players homered during the championship series sweep.

Del Mar snapped a 2-2 tie with five runs in the second inning of the championship series opener. After Lubbock Midwest closed to within 7-5, Del Mar added four runs in each of the game's last three innings to pull away.

Rene Compean paced the Del Mar offense with four hits, including a two-run homer, a triple, and two doubles. Compean, who also notched his second victory of the tournament with a complete game effort on the mound, drove in six runs during the win.

Roberto Gonzalez had a grand slam home run and double, while Fernando Garza's three hits included a two run homer, single, and double. Mark Arredondo contributed three hits, while Mark Mitchell hit a solo home run.

Jason Roberts had four hits for Lubbock Midwest. Casey Berryman added a double and a single.

In the tournament's final game, Tyler Pridmore's two-run double helped Lubbock take a 3-2 lead after the first inning, but Del Mar pitcher Mauricio Granados held the District 2 champions scoreless for the remainder of the game as Del Mar rallied for a 5-3 win.

Del Mar took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the third inning, and added a final tally in the sixth.

Arredondo paced Del Mar's offense with a two-run homer, while R.J. Aguero had a solo home run. Gonzalez added a pair of doubles.

Granados, who struck out seven, pitched Del Mar's third consecutive complete game after a loss in their second game of the tournament.

"Del Mar has a great team," said District 34 Administrator Javier Lozano after the state tournament. "Their pitching is good, and that's what you need."

Strong pitching helped the borderland team rebound from an 8-6 loss to Lubbock Midwest earlier in the tournament. Midwest scored in each of the game's first five innings, and opened up a 7-2 lead before a late Del Mar flurry closed the gap.

Colton Palmer had three hits for Lubbock Midwest in the win, including a triple. Daniel Nichols, Joshua Vasquez, and Pridmore added two hits apiece.

Del Mar was paced by Compean, who homered and singled. Gonzales had three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Maldonado added two hits.

Lubbock Midwest moved into the championship game with the win, while Del Mar needed a 4-2 win over Wichita Falls Little League to earn a rematch. Maldonado threw a complete game two-hitter against Wichita Falls, and Arrendondo's three run homer in the top of the fifth inning reversed a 2-1 Wichita Falls advantage.

Del Mar had earlier taken the lead on Fernando Garza's run-scoring single in the third, but Wichita Falls rallied back with two runs in the third inning. Cameron Allen's RBI single tied the game, and Christien Sager then scored on a passed ball.

Wichita Falls brought the potential winning run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning before Maldonado secured the victory for Del Mar.

"It was a very exciting game," said Dr. Rene Compean. "The kids were excited about having the chance to win and (having) another shot at the state title."

Del Mar, which was the runner-up in a state-wide Texas championship tournament in 1993, returned to the same field for the Southwestern Region tournament. Del Mar won one of its three games at the region tournament, falling to eventual tournament champion Lafayette (Louisiana) Little League and runner-up Bryant Athletic (Arkansas) Little League during pool competition.
