When Jerome Leija wasn't able to beat McAllister Park National with his arm, he tried Plan B.
He beat them with his bat.
Leija slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and help his Jim Parker Little League team to a 3-1 win in the Texas West championship game at Marvin Norcross Stadium in Waco.
Earlier in the day, Leija struck out thirteen batters in a sparkling two-hitter, but McAllister Park's Carter Hahn threw a one-hitter and forced the double-elimination tournament to an 'if' game with a 2-1 win.
The title game was one of only two games at the Texas West championship tournament that was decided by more than one run. Jim Parker's other two wins at the tournament both came by a single run, and helped the Odessa-based league to become the first Permian Basin league ever to advance to a region tournament in the major baseball division.
Jim Parker opened the tournament with a 5-4 win over Waco's Midway Little League. Leija earned the win with a twelve strikeout effort, and Richard Cerda launched a tiebreaking three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to key the Odessa offense. Leija was 2-for-3 in the game, while Midway's Todd Glaesman paced his club's offense with a pair of hits and two runs scored.
The next day, Cerda and Leija drilled back-to-back home runs in the third inning to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead as Jim Parker edged McAllister Park National 6-5. McAllister Park struck for a run in the top of the first inning, but Jim Parker scored three times in the bottom of the inning on hits from A.D. Hinojosa, Cerda, and Bubba Heath. McAllister Park regained the lead, but the home runs and Joey Acosta's RBI groundout put Jim Parker in the lead for good. Hahn's solo home run in the top of the fifth cut the Odessa lead in half, but relief pitcher Adriel Lujan struck out two of the four batters he faced in the sixth inning to preserve the win. Cerda, the winning pitcher, struck out seven and allowed only two hits in five innings of work.
McAllister Park National's only losses at the tournament came at the hands of Jim Parker. The perennial District 19 contender blanked South Brownsville 3-0 in their opener, with Hahn's strong pitching effort and Clint Sharp's home run providing the difference.
After their initial loss to Jim Parker, McAllister Park bounced back, eliminating Midway 3-2. The two teams combined for four double plays in the game before McAllister Park's Garrett Pennington led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk-off home run over the center field fence to send his team to the championship game.
