Summary:

Solana Beach Little League had already dropped the first game in the best-of-three Southern California championship series. They trailed Claremont Little League, 3-0, in the third inning of the series' second game. And the prospect of elimination loomed larger when a Claremont hitter laced a pitch over the center field fence.

In other words, it was business as usual for Solana Beach, which seemingly spent the first month of the international tournament loitering at the intersection of elimination and opportunity. The District 31 champions had already won eleven consecutive win-or-go-home matchups, thanks in part to opening round losses in the double elimination Section 6 and Division 3 South tournaments. In the championship series against Claremont, Solana Beach would add two more wins to that tally.

Claremont's lead-stretching home run was wiped off the books following a successful appeal play -- a huge momentum shift in a game Solana Beach rallied to win, 5-4. Later that afternoon, Solana Beach took the final game of the series by a 9-1 score to capture its first-ever Southern California championship in the major baseball division.

"Our boys work on adversity," said Solana Beach manager Michael Thurston after the tournament clincher. "They need something to kick them in the butt and focus them, and I still don't know why or how they do it."

Solana Beach's resurgence was sparked by an unlikely source: a reserve who played the mandatory minimum defensive innings and struck out in his only plate appearance in the game. Max Kesselhaut noticed from his vantage point in the dugout that the batter who hit the would-be home run had missed third base as he circled the bases.

"They were a classy team, and I did not want to protest the call," explained Solana Beach coach Dan Schreiber. "So I said 'Max, are you sure he missed that base?' He said 'Coach, I am sure.' So Evan Schreiber stepped off the mound and threw to (third) and they rang him up. That was a big momentum change."

"I had never seen anything like that before," said Claremont manager Bob Costello. "When they threw over there, my first thought was 'they can't be serious.'"

Solana Beach still faced the deficit, and needed a pair of rallies to extend the tournament. Schreiber's two-run homer and a solo shot from third baseman Matty Kirkpatrick tied the game in the bottom of the third, and an untimely bout of wildness from two Claremont pitchers led to two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Claremont held a one run lead and recorded the inning's first out before two hit batsmen and three consecutive walks plated the tying and winning runs.

In the nightcap, Claremont scored in the top of the first, but Hayden Grant's leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning sparked a four-run rally as Solana Beach moved in front.

Claremont threatened with a pair of baserunners in the third inning, but eleven year old Chad Thurston's tumbling catch of a two out drive into the right center field gap halted the rally.

Solana Beach pitcher Daniel Reitzler allowed few other scoring chances, permitting just four hits and five baserunners over 5-2/3 innings of work against a Claremont team that scored 170 runs and scored in double-digits nine times over the thirteen games leading up to the championship series. Austin Abadir registered the final out to lift Solana Beach into the West Region tournament in San Bernardino.

Claremont had opened the series with a 7-6 victory. Jason Voorheis' three-run homer opened the scoring in a six run fourth inning rally, and Claremont held off a late Solana Beach rally for the win.

"I actually had him (Voorheis) pulled from the game," said Costello after the game. "But the sub I wanted wasn't ready to go, so I put him back in."

Chad Thurston's bases loaded triple narrowed Claremont's lead to one run in the bottom of the sixth, before reliever Kelly Hilinski recorded a game-ending strikeout to preserve the win.

Solana Beach reached the championship series only after rebounding from an opening round loss in the divisional's South Bracket tournament. Tijeras Creek Little League blanked the District 31 winners, 2-0, in the opening round, but Solana Beach worked its way past Alpine American Little League, 3-2, and Upland Foothill Little League, 13-3 in four innings, to earn a rematch. The eventual winners forced the tournament to a final game -- Jackson Balla's three-run homer in the first gave Solana Beach an early lead, and Kirkpatrick's tiebreaking solo shot in the fifth was the deciding blow -- with a 6-5 victory over Tijeras Creek.

The 'if necessary' game presented Michael Thurston, the Solana Beach manager, with a dilemma. The opening round loss had forced Solana Beach to play five games in as many days, and three of the team's top four pitchers were ineligible to throw in the finale. When Reitzler reached his pitch count limit in the fourth inning, Solana Beach handed the ball to Jackson Gents, who last pitched in early June. Gents limited Tijeras Creek to a single run over the final two innings while closing out the game and the tournament.

"He had the confidence, and even before we decided who was going to pitch, he wanted it," said Dan Schreiber. "What an unbelievable job."

Gents also had a hand in helping to build Solana Beach's early lead, joining Kirkpatrick and Balla with run-scoring hits in the first after Grant's leadoff home run negated an early 1-0 deficit.

While Solana Beach spent the bulk of the tournament teetering on the brink of elimination, Claremont was lethally efficient in its march to the championship series. The District 20 champions won their first eleven tournament games, and immediately avenged their lone loss with an 11-4 win over Tustin Western Little League in the divisional's North Bracket championship game. Claremont averaged over 13 runs per game prior to the championship series, and reached double-digits in nine of its thirteen tournament games.

"This is the best team we've ever had," said Marcus Dowd, the league's president.

Solana Beach kept its summer alive with the championship series comeback, and the Southern California champions went on to win three of their four pool games at the West Region tournament. Solana Beach collected one more must-win victory with a 3-2 decision over Green Valley Little League (Henderson, Nevada) in the semifinal round, before falling, 7-3, to Arizona's Chandler National Little League in the region championship game.
