In a game where all the runs came via the long ball, Quentin Dearden's shot was the biggest hit of all.

Dearden led off the bottom of the seventh inning by homering to left field on a full count pitch, and in the process gave his Coventry American Little League all-star team a 4-3 victory over Cranston Western Little League in the Rhode Island state championship game at Randy Hein Field in Lincoln.

The victory gave Coventry its first-ever state championship in the major baseball division, and advanced the District 3 winners into the New England Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut.

Coventry American and Cranston Western combined for just nine hits in the extra inning championship game, but five of the hits cleared the fences. Cranston's Nick Lawton drilled a two-run homer in the top of the first inning with Steve Piscopiello aboard, but Dearden leveled the score with a two-run shot of his own in the second. Jarrad Grossguth then pushed Coventry in front with a leadoff home run in the fourth, before Cranston evened the score on Piscopiello's blast to left field in the fifth.

Coventry pitcher Manny Bjorklund threw a complete game, striking out nine and allowing just four hits in an 82-pitch effort. Piscopiello was equally tough, striking out ten and allowing only three hits in five innings for Cranston.

The win marked Coventry's second over Cranston Western at the four-team tournament, and the second time Bjorklund and Piscopiello dueled into the late innings. In the tournament's opening game, the two teams were tied 1-1 entering the sixth inning before Grossguth's leadoff home run gave Coventry the lead in what would become a 4-1 victory. Bjorklund struck out eleven and allowed only three hits over 5-1/3 innings in the win, while Piscopiello struck out eleven and allowed just one run.

Coventry American opened the scoring when Nick D'Ambra led off the third inning with a walk. He moved to second on Joey Barter's walk and came around on a pair of passed balls after the second out was recorded. Cranston answered in the bottom of the frame, when Piscopiello delivered a two-out single that plated Mike Diore.

Grossguth's home run gave Coventry a 2-1 advantage, and the Americans added insurance runs when Dearden drove in Kyle Brown with a single, and Bjorklund scored on an error.

Coventry American then moved into the championship game with an 8-1 victory over Barrington Little League. Coventry scored in every inning except the fifth, and built a 6-0 lead through 2-1/2 innings before a Barrington hitter was able to put the ball in play. Grossguth fanned the first six hitters he faced, and, thanks to a dropped third strike, recorded ten strikeouts through the first three innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out 14 before switching positions in the sixth inning.

Grossguth also opened the scoring, hammering a solo home run in the first inning. They added three more in the second. Bjorklund led off the inning with a home run, then Josh Andrade singled and Dearden drew a walk. After the two baserunners advanced on a passed ball, Jack Lacombe singled in a run, and D'Ambra drove in a second run with a sacrifice fly. Brown added a two-run homer in the third, and Grossguth hit his second solo homer in the sixth.

Cranston Western bounced back from its opening round defeat, first eliminating Burrillville Little League, 11-9, and then holding off Barrington, 17-14, in the elimination bracket final. Barrington scored three runs in each of the game's first three innings, and added five more in the fourth. But Cranston countered with nine in the second and seven in the third to secure the win in a game that saw nine home runs and a combined 30 hits.

Chase Griffin and Jake Studley homered in the second for Barrington, Andy Matta added three-run shots in the third and fourth, and Sam Jugerleit drilled a solo home run on the first pitch of the fourth inning. But Jake Procaccianti, who had opened the scoring for Cranston with a solo homer in the first, slammed a grand slam in the second inning to give his team a 7-6 lead it would never relinquish. Nick Dionizo extended the lead with a three-run blast later in the inning, and Jaimen Albizu added a two-run homer in the third.

Coventry American, which became the first league from District 3 to capture the Rhode Island state championship since 1995, opened the New England Region tournament with a pair of 1-0 decisions, first falling to eventual region champion Fairfield American (Connecticut) Little League and then defeating Scarborough (Maine) Little League by the same margin. Coventry then dropped its final two pool contests to finish the tournament in fifth place with a 1-3 record.
