Summary:

Lincoln swept past three opponents to win the 2003 Rhode Island state tournament at the Crown Plaza complex in Warwick.

Lincoln scored four runs or fewer in each of its state tournament victories, but relied on strong pitching and defense to win its fourth state title in five years. After rallying past defending state champion Portsmouth 4-3 in its tournament opener, Lincoln shut out Wickford 3-0 and held off a late Cranston American rally in a 4-2 championship game win.

Lincoln advanced to the New England Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut.

The pitching combination of Ryan Bouthilette and David Hoey led Lincoln to a pair of victories, including the championship game win over Cranston American. Bouthilette carried a one-hit shutout and a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning of the title game, but Lincoln manager Randy Hein elected to change pitchers when Bouthilette issued a leadoff walk and ran the count to 3-2 against Cranston hitter Joe Portukalian.

Hoey completed the walk to Portukalian and registered a strikeout before Cranston plated a pair of runs on a throwing error. Matt Cariglio's double put the tying run in scoring position, but Hoey registered the inning's second out with a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch, and ended the game by inducing a grounder to shortstop.

"I thought he was done," said Hein of his decision to remove Bouthilette in the sixth. "His leg wasn't coming up as high, (and) you can tell a pitcher is done by his legs. And I have all the faith in the world in David Hoey."

Hoey earned that faith with a stellar relief effort in Lincoln's opener. Hoey retired nine of the eleven batters he faced over the final three innings of the game, and kept Portsmouth scoreless while Lincoln rallied from a 3-2 deficit.

"It looked like (Bouthilette) was tiring a little bit, so we brought in Hoey, and he was amazing," said Lincoln assistant coach Charlie Hein. "He came in and displayed a great curveball and that seemed to keep them off-balance."

Portsmouth manager Alex Grande agreed.

"We hadn't seen a curveball at all," said Grande. "Maybe once against Rumford in the districts, but that was from a relief pitcher. We just had trouble adjusting."

While Hoey kept Portsmouth in check, Lincoln rallied in the fourth inning. Pinch-hitter Zach Trenteseaux singled to left, and after a strikeout, Jordan DaCruz reached on an infield single. Trenteseaux scored on Alex Rampone's groundout, and special pinch runner Sam Carlson scored the go-ahead run on Matt D'Amelio's opposite field triple to right field.

Portsmouth had taken a 3-2 lead on Tim Flight's RBI single in the second, and on a two-run third inning rally fueled by two errors, two wild pitches and a passed ball. The District 2 champions benefitted from five walks and three Lincoln errors in the game, but stranded seven runners and managed only two hits.

"They were able to put a couple hits together, we couldn't," said Grande. "We just didn't get the run in."

Eleven-year-old Chris Cosantino picked up where Hoey left off in Lincoln's next game. Cosantino threw a sparkling three-hitter and struck out ten batters as Lincoln earned a championship game berth with a 3-0 victory over Wickford.

"Chris is now 5-0 and he still hasn't given up an earned run," said Randy Hein of Cosantino's international tournament performance. "He's done the job all year . . . I'm not sure if there's a better pitcher in the state."

John Tangherlini paced Lincoln's offense with two hits and a pair of RBIs. He drove in the game's first run with a soft line drive to right field that scored Trenteseaux in the third inning, and padded the lead with a two-out single up the middle following D'Amelio's double in the fifth.

"When we need him, Johnny is always there," said Randy Hein of Tangherlini's performance.

"Our defense was tremendous," he added. "Our catcher (Chris Jackson) made a lot of blocks back there, and we throw a lot of curveballs. He did a terrific job."

Cranston American was also terrific, rebounding from an extra inning loss to Wickford in the tournament's first game to face Lincoln in the title game. Cranston outlasted Portsmouth in an eleven inning marathon played over two days, then defeated Wickford in a rematch to gain the state championship game for the first time since 1964.

Cranston's win over Portsmouth equaled the length of the longest game in Rhode Island state tournament history. Cranston Western edged Rumford 7-5 in an opening round game in 1998.

Lincoln won three of its four pool game at the New England Region tournament in Bristol before dropping a 2-1 decision to Augusta West (Maine) Litle League in the semifinal round.
