Summary:

Ryan Westmoreland threw a one-hitter to lead his Portsmouth Little League all-star team to a victory over Warwick American at the state tournament.

Three days later, he did it again.

Westmoreland's first one-hitter came in Portsmouth's 2-0 victory in the opening round. Portsmouth then dispatched Burrillville to advance to the championship game, while Warwick won a pair of one-run games to climb through the loser's bracket and earn a rematch.

When the two teams met again, the result was the same. Westmoreland struck out eleven batters as Portsmouth defeated Warwick American 1-0 to win its first ever state championship.

Westmoreland needed only 61 pitches in his second outing. He did not allow a run in any of his four starts during district and state tournament play.

"Ryan has such great command of his pitches," said Ryan's father and Portsmouth's manager Ron Westmoreland. "The things that he does out there are a level above everyone else and he is an asset for any team he plays on."

"The first time we faced Ryan, we weren't even close to hitting him," Warwick American manager Al Box said after the championship game. "I was still confident until the end after we spent the day in the batting cage with the juice turned up.

"But if we were going to lose to anyone, this would be the team."

Warwick pitcher Bill Laurie matched Ryan Westmoreland's championship game effort in the early innings, but Portsmouth broke through in the the third. Third baseman Adam Reece keyed the rally by lining a one-out double into the left-center field gap. One out later, Ryan Westmoreland doubled to the base of the center field fence to drive in the game's only run.

Laurie struck out six and allowed only five hits while pitching with only one day of rest between starts.

Portsmouth reached the championship game with a 6-4 win over Burrillville, which ended Lincoln's six-year string of district championships with 10-3 and 5-2 victories in the District 4 championship series. Against Portsmouth, Burrillville struck out only three times and hit the ball hard throughout the game, but the eventual champions were sharp defensively.

Burrillville, by contrast, committed five errors, including three in the bottom of the first inning, when Portsmouth scored three runs to erase an early 2-0 deficit.

Reece opened the inning with a walk, and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt. One out later, he moved to third as Burrillville's defense misplayed Ryan Westmoreland's fly ball to left. Brian Sherburne lifted a fly ball to deep center field that was dropped, and Reece and Ryan Westmoreland both scored. Connor Fagan followed with an RBI single that scored Sherburne and gave Portsmouth the lead for good.

Portsmouth stretched its lead in the second when 4-foot, 6-inch Dan Dugan launched a towering two-run homer to center field. Burrillville sliced the deficit in the fifth on an RBI double by Philip Trautwein and a run-producing single by Kyle Vanrossum. John Pedrotty's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth gave Portsmouth its final margin of victory.

Pedrotty, who came on in relief of starter Mike Lynch in the fifth, ended the game with a three-pitch strikeout that stranded a pair of Burrillville baserunners.

While errors hurt Burrillville, Portsmouth's defense handled numerous hard shots in the field.

"They're a great fundamental team," said Ron Westmoreland of his team following the championship game. "They don't make a lot of mistakes."

Portsmouth, which won only its fourth ever district title in 2002, had reached the state tournament in 2001, but quickly bowed out of the tournament with a pair of losses. The 2002 team was the first Portsmouth team ever to win a game at the Rhode Island state tournament.

"Back when these kids were in grade school, the phys-ed teachers said that these guys were better than normal," recalled Portsmouth league president Leo Doucet.

"What makes them special is their chemestry," said Ron Westmoreland. "And they have a real passion for the game. They'll play as much as I want them to practice."

Portsmouth kept playing deep into the New England Region Tournament at Bristol, Connecticut. Portsmouth reached the semifinal round, where Ryan Westmoreland threw a five-hit shutout as the Rhode Island champions upended top-seeded Orange (Connecticut) Little League 1-0 to reach the championship game. Despite a strong pitching performance from Lynch, Portsmouth fell in the title game by a 1-0 margin to Jesse Burkett (Worcester, Massachusetts) Little League.
