Council Rock Newtown 1, Moon Township 0
Council Rock Newtown 10, Moon Township 6 (7 innings; TITLE)

Summary:

Jared Schram drilled a walk-off grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Council Rock Newtown Little League past Moon Township, 10-6, in the deciding game of the Pennsylvania state championship series at Smythe Park in Mansfield.

Schram's home run completed his team's comeback from a 4-3 fifth inning deficit in a see-saw finale, and gave Newtown its second win in as many games in the best two-of-three final series hosted by Southern Tioga Little League. Mike Whalley had given Newtown a 6-4 lead with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, before Moon Township rallied to tie the game in the top of the sixth.

Whalley also played an integral role in his team's 1-0 victory in the series' first game. Whalley threw a complete game in the win, and sealed the win by inducing a strikeout, groundout, and fly ball in the sixth inning to give his team the win.

"Whalley was a trooper," said Council Rock Newtown manager Randy Coppola. "He's battle-tested. He's been in big games before and he stepped up and made that lone run hold up."

Xavier Lezynski scored the game's only run when he singled and eventually scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning.

Ten of the eleven players on Newtown's roster had played on the league's 10-11 year old all-star team, which won the Pennsylvania championship the prior summer.

While Newtown had shown success at the younger age level the prior year, both state finalists had finished among the state's final four teams in the major baseball division in 2009. Moon Township had won the Pennsylvania championship with an entirely different group of players, while Newtown's twelve-year-old team finished as the Eastern Pennsylvania runner-up to Media Little League the prior summer.

Council Rock Newtown avenged that defeat in the 2010 Eastern Pennsylvania championship game, grabbing command of the game early and running out to a 12-2, five inning victory over Media. After retiring Media in the top of the first inning, Newtown exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame before pulling away for the victory. James Closser delivered an RBI single to open the scoring, then an error and a bases-loaded walk to Noah Hartwell plated two more runs. Eleven-year-old Zac Deegan capped the rally with a three-run double.

"We can be very explosive, so that doesn't surprise me," said Newtown coach Matt Schram of the big first inning rally. "But Media, as good as they are, you go in thinking a low-scoring game. To put six runs on the board is surprising in the sense of who it was against, but not surprising because we've done that so much this year."

Closser added a solo home run in the second, and Deegan delivered a two-run single in the fourth. In the fifth, Whalley added a two-run single to left field that invoked the mercy rule. Pitcher Seth Levz struck out six and allowed just two runs in 4-2/3 innings.

Media had blanked Council Rock Newtown, 3-0, in a round-robin meeting earlier in the tournament. That game was played over the course of two days due to weather-related delays.

"The 3-0 loss didn't seem to phase them," said Matt Schram. "Our kids were so loose, you would have thought it was just another game. I don't think they recognized that it had the potential to be their last game."

Moon Township advanced to the state championship series by stunning DuBois, 5-3, in the Western Pennsylvania finals. DuBois had pulled ahead 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning, before Moon Township's Joe Sibeto lined a two-out, full count fastball over the center field fence for a walk-off three-run home run that gave his team a 5-3 victory.

Council Rock Newtown swept to five consecutive wins at the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, and reached the region championship game before dropping an 8-5 decision to Toms River National (New Jersey) Little League.
