Summary:

Shippensburg's Bob Shannon and David Orndorff put on a power pitching clinic, as they combined to allow no runs and only two hits in Shippensburg's three state tournament victories. Shannon, who three days earlier had struck out 18 batters in the Section 3 championship game against Back Mountain, began the tourney by striking out 17 and allowed only one hit in an opening round win over Lehigh. Orndorff slammed two homers for Shippensburg, while Donnie Miller added another. In the second round, Orndorff fired a no-hitter (striking out 14) and Shippensburg blasted three more homers to overwhelm Ellwood City. In the title game, Shannon led the way by striking out 16, allowing only one hit, and opening the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning.

Shippensburg went on to win the Eastern Region Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut to qualify for the Little League World Series in South Williamsport. They captured the U.S. national championship with a 5-4 win over the Cypress Federal Little League (Southern California) in the World Series semifinals before falling to San Hua, Chinese Taipei by a 6-0 score in the Little League World Series championship game.
