Summary:

Punxsutawney Groundhog Little League rallied from a 3-1 deficit after four innings to defeat Hazleton 6-3 and win its only state title. Jim Bowser took over for starting pitcher Jim Costanzo in the first inning after Costanzo allowed two early runs, and then allowed only one run and two hits the rest of the way to pick up the victory. Ed Curry's two-run single in the fifth inning tied the game, and Bowser then drove in the go-ahead run. Curry later drove in two insurance runs in the sixth.

Costanzo and Bowser had led Punxsutawney into the third round. Costanzo homered twice and drove in five runs (the second homer snapped a 3-3 tie in the fifth) as Punxsutawney eliminated Williamsport Brandon in their opener, and Bowser and Costanzo combined on a two-hitter in Punxy's 4-1 semifinal round win over McKeesport.

Hazleton eliminated Harrisburg in the second semifinal contest. The game was tied 3-3 in the fifth inning when it was ended due to rain. As was customary in this era, the game was set to be replayed from the start. After three consecutive days of rainouts, Mike Nastanovich struck out 12 and Francis Kattner hit a grand slam home run as Hazleton won the rematch 7-1.
