Summary:

The 1989 tournament opened with a flourish, as Cherry Hill American's Chris Materese hurled a no-hitter to lead the Section 4 contingent past Morristown National 1-0. The tourney ended with a bang -- the clap of thunder. After Morristown National won consecutive loser's bracket games to force a rematch against Cherry Hill, the title game was rained out twice.

Because of time constraints and the imminent start of the Eastern Region Tournament, tournament officials awarded the state championship to Cherry Hill American based on their earlier victory and their undefeated standing in the tournament.
