Summary:

First baseman Larry Giordano sent the first pitch of the game flying 230 feet over the center field fence to lead his team to a 4-1 victory over Gloucester City as Nottingham captured its first ever state title. Jim Leigh scattered five hits to get the win, while eight of the nine Nottingham starters contributed safetys in the balanced nine-hit attack.

Nottingham reached the title game by rapping out thirteen hits in a 8-3 semifinal round win over Livingston National. Gloucester City advanced by edging Morristown American, 5-4, after overcoming a six run deficit to defeat Woodbury, 9-7 in eleven innings, in the Section 4 championship game. In that game, Gloucester City trailed 7-1 after two innings, before reliever Rick Ricardi made his international tournament debut with nine scoreless innings in relief. Paul Jones led the comeback offensively, and his third home run of the day plated Bobby Tobin and sent the District 14 champions to the state tournament.
