Mario Ruiz belted a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to propel West New York American past Upper Saddle River in the state championship game. Ruiz's hit spoiled a magnificent pitching performance by losing pitcher Steve Dreyer. Through five innings, Dreyer had struck out 15, walked two, and allowed no balls hit into fair territory. In the sixth, ninth-place West New York hitter Bob Mohr walked, and leadoff hitter Jimmy Stephens reached on a bad-hop single. A groundout and strikeout moved the runners to second and third, and Upper Saddle River coach Hol Hollipeter elected to pitch to Ruiz with first base open. Ruiz was also impressive on the mound for West New York, striking out 17 and allowing only three hits.

In the semifinals, Ruiz again supplied the offense with a three-run homer, and Ike Alonso pitched his third consecutive tournament no-hitter to lead West New York past Haddonfield. Alonso, who struck out 13, had previously thrown no-hitters against Hoboken South in the District 7 tournament and Wood Ridge in the Section 2 semifinals. Upper Saddle River, powered by home runs from Bill Trethaway, Dave Turrin, and Bruce DiFelice, disposed of Old Bridge in the other semifinal.

West New York American went on the win the Connecticut-New Jersey Divisional and Eastern Region Tournaments to advance to the Little League World Series. They advanced to the championship game before falling 8-2 to the Westbury American Little League (Houston, Texas).
