Summary:

Sayreville pounded out ten hits in both its semifinal and championship round wins to capture the state title. Sayreville took an early lead in the title game on Jim Passitally's solo home run, but River Edge rallied back to take a 2-1 lead. Sayreville tied it in the second and went ahead for good in the third. An error, a walk, and John Price's base hit loaded the bases with none out in the third. Craig Delvin relieved starting pitcher Ed McDermott, who complained of a sore arm, and Jamie Van Dyk greeted Delvin with a bases-clearing double off the left-centerfield wall. He later scored on a base hit, and Sayreville closed the scoring on Mike Marcinczyk's three-run homer in the sixth.

River Edge gained the title game when pinch hitter Steve Goepel blasted a grand-slam homer to best Livingston 4-0. In the nightcap, Sayreville scored four times after two were out in the first inning, and added six in the fourth to overpower Margate City. Margate committed seven errors and its pitchers issued six walks to aid the Sayreville cause.
