Ties are broken based on records in head-to-head competition among tied teams. If a clear winner cannot be determined from head-to-head results, the tie is broken by calculating the ratio of runs allowed to defensive innings played for all teams involved in the tie. The team with the lowest runs-per-defensive-inning ratio advances.

In the event of a tie involving three or more teams, once the initial tie is broken, the remaining tied teams are again compared on head-to-head record to determine if a clear winner can be identified. If no clear winner can be identified from head-to-head results among the remaining tied teams, the runs-per-defensive-inning ratio is again used. This process is repeated until all ties have been broken.

For Girard Little League, the payoff was worth the wait.

In a game that was completed two days after it began due to inclement weather, Girard downed Baxter Springs Little League, 4-1, in the championship game of the Kansas state tournament as Baxter Springs' field. With the victory, Girard's second over Baxter Springs in the four-team state tournament, Girard advanced to the Midwest Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ethan Jahay paced Girard, doubling to help pace the Girard offense, and also earning the victory on the mound. Wade Boatman also doubled for the winners, while Braven Born closed out the win by throwing the final two innings. Girard scored once in the second inning, then added two more in the third and a solo tally in the fifth inning.

Girard opened the state tournament with a 4-0 victory over Riverton Area Little League. Pitcher Brendan Schmidt struck out thirteen, walked none, and allowed just two hits. Schmidt registered twelve consecutive strikeouts between the second and sixth innings while needing just 64 pitches to throw a complete game. His counterpart, Riverton's Beau Gardner, surrendered just four hits and also threw a complete game, but Girard's offense broke through for four runs to earn the victory.

Born and Ty Norris both reached on infield errors in the first inning, before Jahay's two-run single plated both baserunners. In the fifth, Born singled, and with two outs, Jahay launched a two-run homer beyond the left center field fence.

Girard followed this victory with a 12-4 victory over Baxter Springs in the winner's bracket final. The victors held a narrow 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored seven runs in that frame to break the game open. Norris was 2-for-2 with a home run in the win, while Boatman (home run and three runs batted in) and Schmidt also had a pair of hits.

The victory moved Girard into the state championship game for the second consecutive year, and for the third time in the league's history. Girard also won Kansas championships in 2003 and 2012.
