Bryce Burdette hit for the cycle, and his Cherokee Community Little League team weathered an early surge before defeating Paola Little League, 15-7, to win the best-of-three Kansas state championship series at Baxter Springs Little League's field.

Cherokee, which won the opening game of the championship matchup but lost the series' second game, earned its first Kansas title in the major baseball division since 1999, and advanced to the Midwest Region tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Burdette singled and belted a three-run homer in the early stages of the deciding game, as Cherokee raced to an 8-0 lead. Paola narrowed the deficit to a single run, but Cherokee soon pulled away with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.

Burdette's triple keyed the fourth inning rally. He, Jason Reed, and Quintan Tyree all contributed run-scoring doubles in the fifth.

Reed also singled twice for Cherokee, while Tyree and Morgan Johnson each added a pair of hits. Cherokee collected thirteen hits in the game.

For Paola, Kyle Isabell was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Kyle Johnson had a pair of hits.

Cherokee did not allow a run in any of its three area tournament victories leading up to the state championship series, and pitcher Josh Thompson extended his team's scoreless inning streak with a no-hitter in Cherokee's first win over Paola. Cherokee scored twice in the first inning, and Thompson, who struck out thirteen and walked only one, made the early advantage hold up.

The next day, Cherokee opened an early lead, but Paola rallied from a five-run deficit and forced the tournament to a deciding game with an 8-6 victory. Cherokee scored the game's first five runs, but Andrew Henn's three-run homer in the third narrowed the deficit for Paola. The Miami County team eventually tied the game, but trailed 6-5 before striking for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for the win.

Paola's Hunter Locke fouled off a series of pitches before singling in the tying run in the fifth. Paola added two more runs later in the inning.

Henn and Ryan Hedding had two hits for Paola, which finished as the Kansas runner-up for the second consecutive year. Thompson and Tyree had two hits each for Cherokee, while Johnson drove in a pair of runs.
