It didn't take long for the Girard Little League to make a name for itself.

Competing in Little League Baseball's international tournament for the first time, Girard proved its mettle with an extended tournament run, cruising through the Kansas District 2 tournament and then sweeping Hugoton's Southwest Kansas Little League in the state tournament at Ulysses.

Girard routed Southwest Kansas 13-1 in a mercy rule-shortened state tournament opener, then returned the next evening for a 9-0 victory to clinch the best-of-three series.

With the wins, Girard advanced to the Midwest Region tournament in Indianapolis.

"For our first year in Little League play, to get to the region tournament and be only (three) wins away from Williamsport is quite an achievement," said Girard coach Randy Heatherly at the completion of his team's season.

Darian Kelly paced Girard in its first win over Southwest Kansas, drilling a home run and combining with Colton Ghumm on a four inning no-hitter. After holding Southwest Kansas scoreless in the top of the first inning, Girard plated three runs in the first and two more in the second before an eight run avalanche in the third put the game out of reach.

J.D. Heatherly and Johnny Webb doubled for Girard, while Stanley Brown added a triple.

The next evening, Ghumm snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the third inning, and pitchers Eric Strukel and J.D. Heatherly combined on a five-hit shutout as Girard secured the state championship with a 9-0 win.

Girard broke the game open in the fourth inning. The Eastern Kansas champions padded their lead when Southwest Kansas elected to force in a run by intentionally walking Kelly with the bases loaded and two outs. The unusual strategy backfired, however, when Heatherly followed with a bases-clearing double and Brown added a run-producing single.

At the region tournament in Indianapolis, Girard handed eventual region champion North Scott Little League (Eldridge, Iowa) its only defeat of the tournament when Kelly hurled a two-hitter in a 4-1 round-robin victory. Girard finished the tournament in fifth place with a 1-3 record.
