Baxter Springs captured its third consecutive state title with a pair of blowout victories over Hugoton Southwest Kansas. In the first game, Gary Elliot struck out 13 and allowed only three hits, while Baxter hitters blasted three homer runs. J.W. Mallatt's three-run shot in the first inning gave Baxter Springs an early 3-0 lead; they added five in the third (fueled by a Mark Myers homer), and capped the scoring on Nathan Miles' sixth-inning grand slam.

In the second game, Mallatt, Myers, and Andy Storm all homered, while pitcher Craig Weston allowed only three hits and a sixth inning two-run homer by Hugoton's Todd Perry. Hugoton held a slim 2-0 lead going into the fifth inning, when Myers connected for a three-run homer and Storm followed it with a two run shot to cap the eight run rally.

Baxter Springs later won the Central Region Division 1 Tournament (Myers threw a no-hitter to beat Tulsa, Oklahoma, 3-0 in the title game) and eventually finished fourth in the Central Region Tournament.
