Mike Haefele threw a two-hitter and keyed a three-run first inning rally with an RBI single as his Olathe East Little League all-star team defeated Hoisington Little League, 7-1, in the Kansas state championship game at Baxter Springs.

Haefele struck out twelve and allowed only a sixth inning unearned run to notch his third victory of the international tournament. Previously, the left-hander shut out Paola Little League, 9-0, and Forbes Air Force Base Little League, 3-0, in District 2 competition.

Olathe East struck for three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed while earning its fifth consecutive victory. Steve Vance reached on a fielding error to open the game, and was forced on Scott Hickam's grounder. Hickam moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Haefele's single to left field. Kevin Wahaus followed by driving the first pitch from Hoisington's pitcher over the center field fence for a two-run home run.

Haefele doubled and later scored on Wahaus' grounder in the third inning, then Olathe capped the evening with a three-run rally in the sixth.

Rusty Thomas, Jay Roberts, and Kenny Childress opened the sixth with consecutive singles to widen Olathe East's lead to 5-0. Roberts and Childress advanced on a passed ball, and both baserunners scored on a throwing error following Rick Spiering's grounder to the third baseman.

Hoisington, the 1972 Kansas champion, avoided a shutout by scoring a run on a throwing error in the sixth inning.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would win a state championship," said Olathe East manager Leonard Haefele after the game.

Olathe East reached the state championship game by winning three games in area tournament competition, then used a flurry of six extra base hits to defeat Baxter Springs Little League, 8-3, in the District 2 championship game. Mike Haefele and Thomas both homered, with Haefele's two out solo shot in the first inning opening the scoring. Wahaus followed with a double, and scored when Baxter Springs misplayed a fly ball from Thomas.

Haefele doubled and scored on a balk in the third, then Wahaus singled before Thomas delivered his home run.

Powell Michael walked and scored on Hickam's sacrifice fly in the fourth, and in the sixth, Olathe East scored twice on just one hit. Childress opened the inning with a double before a pair of walks loaded the bases. Vance's sacrifice fly drove in one run, and a passed ball and balk plated the second run.

Three Olathe pitchers combined on a five-hitter in the win, with Phil Clark starting and earning the win. Dean Perdue entered in the fourth inning, inheriting three baserunners while Olathe East tried to protect a 6-3 lead. Perdue registered a pair of strikeouts and induced a fly out to escape the jam, then held Baxter Springs scoreless over the remaining two innings.

Olathe East advanced to the newly-renamed Central Region tournament following their state tournament victory. The Kansas champions fell, 10-0, to eventual region runner-up Timberline Little League (Rapid City, South Dakota) in the opening round.
