In 1957, Iowa held its first state tournament. The state's leagues were divided into two districts, and the two district champions met in a one-game playoff that determined the state's champion. Iowa's champion then advanced to the North Region Division 1 tournament, where they faced other Midwestern leagues for the right to advance to the North Region tournament.
Today, Iowa has six districts, each of which sends a district champion to the Iowa State tournament. The Iowa champion advances to the Midwest Region tournament in Whitestown, Indiana, where they compete for the right to advance to the Little League World Series.
Fifteen Iowa leagues have participated in the Little League World Series, including the state's most recent qualifier, Davenport Southeast Little League in 2022. Davenport East Little League finished as the U.S. runner-up in 2000, which represent's Iowa's best-ever finish at the Little League World Series.
