The Illinois State Tournament

The first ever Illinois state tournament was held in 1957. Prior to that year, Illinois district champions competed in sectional tournaments that also included teams from other states and provinces. The winners of these sectional meets advanced directly to the region tournament, making it conceivable that no Illinois league -- or multiple leagues -- would advance to the region tournament.

The initial Illinois state tournament brought four sectional champions together for a single elimination tournament, and the state champion then advanced to the North Region tournament. Today, all district champions from throughout the state advance to the state tournament. The Illinois state champions advance to the Great Lakes Region tournament in Whitestown, Indiana. The winner of this tournament qualifies for the Little League World Series.

Sixteen Illinois teams have won region championships and competed in the Little League World Series, including the state's most recent qualifier, Clarendon Hills Little League in 2025. Three of these teams reached the Little League World Series championship game: the Kankakee Jaycees Little League in 1958 and 1962, and Chicago's Roseland North Little League in 1967.
