Idaho's first Little League charters were formed in the 1950s, when leagues were formed in the Pocatello area, and also in Kellogg. In the early years of international tournament competition, these leagues competed alongside charters from other states in the early rounds of tournament competition, with Pocatello leagues traveling to Utah, and Kellogg facing leagues from Montana and Eastern Washington in early tournament games. By the beginning of the next decade, no Idaho leagues elected to enter the international tournament.
Several communities in Northern Idaho formed Little League charters by the early 1960s, and in 1962, the first state tournament was held when four leagues competed in Wallace to determine the Gem State's champion. Homestanding Wallace Little League won that inaugural tournament, and advanced to sectional tournament competition where they faced other state and provincial champions from the Western U.S. and Canada.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, no Idaho leagues were chartered outside of Northern Idaho, but in 1980, new leagues were chartered in the Boise area. As a result, Idaho organized its leagues into two districts, and today the champions of these two districts meet in a best 2-of-3 series that determines Idaho's champion. The Idaho state champion advances to the Northwest Region tournament in San Bernardino, California, where they compete for the right to advance to the Little League World Series.
Two Idaho leagues have reached the Little League World Series. South Central Boise Little League won the Western Region tournament in 1998, and Coeur d'Alene Little League won the Northwest Region tournament in 2018.
