To say that Lewiston Little League's season was on the line would be an understatement.

The District 2 champions had already absorbed one loss in the best-of-three state championship series, and with one out in the top of the second inning, Lewiston trailed Nampa Valley Little League by a 7-0 score after a five-run rally that was still very much alive.

But as the game progressed, it became clear that this rally was only a knockdown, and not a knockout. From that nadir, Lewiston not only escaped further damage in the inning, but climbed back and rallied for a 9-7 victory that evened the series. And the next day, Lewiston scored in every inning of a mercy rule-shortened, 13-3 decision to clinch its second state championship in the major baseball division in a four year span.

Relief pitcher Tyson Wallace sparked Lewiston's comeback, quashing any further Nampa Valley scoring in the second, and then throwing an additional three innings of scoreless relief. He surrendered just one hit from the time he moved to the mound through the fifth inning, while Lewiston reversed the large early deficit. And his bat delivered the hit that pushed Lewiston into the lead: a three-run home run with two outs in the fourth that turned a 7-5 deficit into an 8-7 lead.

Harrison Smart keyed Lewiston's decisive fourth inning rally with a leadoff double, and Dalton Hart followed with a two-run home run that sliced Nampa Valley's lead to 7-4. Noah Norwood walked and D.J. Ricard singled, but a pair of strikeouts brought Nampa to within an out of escaping further trouble. That's when Trayton Skiller singled to score Norwood, and Wallace followed with a home run that gave Lewiston the lead. It would not trail again in the tournament.

Nampa had built its early lead on a pair of hits by Lan Larison: a two-run homer in the first, and a two-run double in the second. Kaleb Glascock added a two-run single in the second before Wallace came on to pitch.

The next day, Lewiston grabbed a lead three batters into the game, and never trailed in a 13-3 victory that decided the tournament. After Lewiston's first hitter was retired, Mason Daniel delivered a two-strike single, and Wallace followed with a two-run home run. Nampa halved the deficit on Fernando Pina's run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning, but catcher Jason Hanchett countered this with a solo home run in the second.

Nampa Valley had collected five hits through the game's first two innings, but had also stranded five baserunners against Hart, the Lewiston starter. Lewiston capitalized on Nampa's missed opportunities in the third, scoring five times and taking control of the game. Wallace singled with one out, and an error and walk loaded the bases. Hart drove home a pair of runs with a single, and pinch hitter Dawson Bonfield followed with a three-run homer that gave Lewiston an 8-1 advantage.

The floodgates remained open in the fourth. Daniel singled, Wallace doubled, and Tui Moliga walked to load the bases. Hart then drew a bases loaded walk, and Bonfield worked a full count before slamming a grand slam that pushed Lewiston's lead to a ten-run margin.

Bonfield relieved Hart in the bottom of the inning, and struck out two of the four batters he faced before lifting Lewiston into the Northwest Region tournament in San Bernardino, California.

Nampa Valley, which was also the Idaho runner-up in the major baseball division in 2013, opened the best-of-three series with a 5-4 victory in Game 1. Larison delivered a two-out, two-strike, three run home run in the fifth that reversed a 4-2 deficit, and relief pitcher Jonas Plew closed out the win by retiring all six hitters he faced in relief of starter Jayden Moran.

Evan Harmon gave Nampa Valley an early lead with a solo home run, and Plew doubled home a run in the second. But Lewiston grabbed a temporary lead in the bottom of the second, when Hanchett tied the game with a two-run double and ninth-place hitter Panji Woodbury followed with a two-run single.

Lewiston became the fourth consecutive league from Northern Idaho's District 1 to claim the Gem state's championship in the major baseball division, following their win in 2011 and titles claimed by Post Falls in 2012 and Coeur d'Alene in 2013. Prior to that streak, Boise-area leagues had won seven Idaho titles in eight years.
