Newark National Little League rebounded from an opening game loss with three consecutive victories to win the Delaware state championship at Lower Sussex Little League's field in Frankford.

Newark National defeated the host team twice in the championship series, slamming four home runs in a 9-2 victory that forced the tournament to a deciding game, and then getting a two-hit shutout from starting pitcher Alex Barker and reliever Aaron Weber in a 7-0 decision in the tourney's final game.

"The boys played well and Alex threw the ball well for us," said Newark manager Nick DeMartine. "I couldn't be any happier."

Barker blanked Lower Sussex for 5-2/3 innings in the teams' second matchup, striking out eleven batters and walking only two before reaching his pitch count limit and switching to first base. Weber retired the only batter he faced to give Newark National its sixth-ever state championship in the major baseball division, and its first since 1992.

Newark National followed its district championship game win by dropping its state tournament opener, 4-1, to Dover Little League. After Dover fell against Lower Sussex, Newark defeated the same team in a rematch by a 16-6 margin to advance to the championship series.

In the first meeting against Lower Sussex, all of Newark's nine runs came via home runs as the District 2 winners handed its Lower Delaware opponent its first loss. Barker opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning, and later in the frame, pitcher Chris Ludman added a two-out, three-run blast that represented his first-ever home run.

Barker, who had drilled a grand slam the previous evening in the win over Dover, delivered another bases loaded shot in the fifth that extended the edge to 8-1, and Nick Jones added a solo home run in the sixth.

Ludman scattered six hits over five innings, and stranded eight baserunners while earning the victory.

The next evening, Newark National again broke the game open with a four-run second inning rally, but this burst was fueled by patience at the plate, as Newark drew three walks and capitalized on five wild pitches in the frame. Catcher Brandon Hoeflinger and Jones each added run-scoring singles in the inning.

Barker homered in the top of the third, and Newark National added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to seal the victory.

Zion Howard and Zane Richard each had base hits for Lower Sussex.

"They gave me everything they've got every night," said DeMartine, whose team finished the summer with an 11-2 record. "This is a big year for us."

Newark National's state championship advanced the team to the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. The Delaware champions swept to victories in all four of its pool contests before falling, 2-1, to Paramus (New Jersey) Little League in the semifinal round.
