Summary:
John Shull struck out ten batters and scattered four hits to lead his McAllister Park American Little League past Del Mar Little League, 6-3, in the Texas West state championship game at Kelly Field in Fort Worth.
Shull's efforts helped McAllister Park American to the league's second state championship in six years, and extended a tournament run in which the San Antonio league eventually reached the United States championship game.
Travis Davies paced the McAllister Park offense with a solo home run, while Nick Smisek collected a pair of hits and drove in a run. Drew Brooks and Tanner Scarborough also drove in runs for the District 19 champions. Del Mar threatened in the final inning, and brought the potential tying run to the plate before rain forced a delay that eventually shortened the championship game to five innings.
McAllister Park reached the championship game by defeating each of the tournament's other qualifiers. The team opened state tournament play with an 8-2 victory over Waco's Midway Little League, then topped Lubbock Western Little League, 10-5.
Del Mar, which won the Texas West championship in 2005, dropped its opener to Lubbock Western before rebounding with a pair of victories. Bernardo Martinez drove in three runs and pitched the Laredo team past Midway, 5-2, then Jerry Aguilar's double keyed a two-run first inning rally as Del Mar edged Lubbock Western, 2-1 in a rematch.
McAllister Park American became the fifth team from the San Antonio league to reach the Texas West championship game in the past seven years. The Americans won the Texas West crown in 2004, while McAllister Park's National League charter finished as the state runner-up in 2003, 2007, and 2008.
