Summary:
Pitcher Mike Kaschak hit a second inning grand slam and hurled a complete game to lead Hazleton National Little League past Council Rock Little League in the semifinals, and title game pitcher Tony Mundie belted two solo home runs to lead Hazleton past Latrobe Little League 2-1 in the title game.
Kaschak's gramd slam staked Hazleton to a 4-0 lead. Lew Matuella led off the inning with a double, and Terry McNelis walked. One out later, Steve Kopetske singled to fill the bases before Kaschak delivered the big blow. Council Rock rallied back with two in the fifth, but, after Don Donofry's double, Kaschak indiced a popup to end the inning.
In the other semifinal, Rawland Cogan fired a one-hitter and Walt Huska homered twice as Latrobe overwhelmed Oil City 8-1. Huska belted a two-run homer in the first inning to stake Latrobe to a 2-0 lead, and later iced the victory with a fourth inning grand slam.
In the title game, Mundie's round trippers were the difference. His two-out homer to center in the fourth inning opened the scoring, and his one-out blast in the sixth made it 2-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Latrobe rallied. An error and a single put runners on second and third with two outs. Kaschak bobbled Mike Kromel's grounder to short, allowing one run to score. When Dan Brunozzi attempted to score from second, Kaschak's throw to catcher Jim Breslin was in plenty of time, and Breslin held onto the ball when Brunozzi attempted to bowl him over. Mundie struck out eight and scattered four hits; losing pitcher Huska allowed just four hits while striking out nine.
