The path to the Little League World Series has evolved for these leagues in recent years. Through the 2005 international tournament, a number of leagues were also chartered in the southwestern portion of the state, and the winners of District 1 (Southwestern Kansas) and District 2 (Southeastern Kansas) met to determine the state's champion. In recent years, the District 2 champion has had a direct path to the region tournament. Additionally, in years prior to 1990, the Kansas state champion faced winners from other Plains states for the right to advance to the region tournament. Since Little League Baseball opened its region headquarters complex in Indianapolis, however, the Kansas state champion has advanced directly to the region tournament.
No Kansas team has ever participated in the Little League World Series. Frontenac Youth Little League achieved Kansas' highest finish when they reached the Midwest Region championship game in 2016.
