Hirakata advanced to the Far East Region Tournament at Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. They finished the six-team tournament in a three-way tie for first place, losing only to South Korea (by a 6-0 score in the third round) during round-robin competition. Hirakata defeated the Philippines 3-2 in the first tiebreaking round, and then defeated South Korea 14-4 in the championship game.

At the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Hirakata finished pool competition with a 2-1 record. Hirakata defeated Gordon Head Little League (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) 7-3 in the tournament's opening game. They then defeated Ramstein Air Force Base (Germany) 5-2 and lost 3-1 to the Juan Bibiloni Little League (Yabucoa, Puerto Rico). Hirakata faced Juan Bibiloni again in the International championship game, and used a fast start to defeat the Puerto Rican team 12-2 in five innings. Hirakata then defeated Phenix City National Little League (Phenix City, Alabama) 5-0 to win the Little League World Series.

Hirakata was the fourth Japanese league ever to win the Little League World Series, and the first since Tokyo's Chofu Little League won the World Series in 1976.
